I'm A Human Crayon

So what happened to #blogmas, you may ask ... you probably haven't even noticed but hey I'm going to pretend you have. Well social media of course, it's cold outside I'm not out as much. I get bored, and somehow I end up spending four hours sharing videos on Facebook and RT the life out of Twitter. Yes I know what I need to do, yes I know I should be doing it. But opening an app is like falling down the rabbit hole, you should tap out but than what's one more like, share or comment.

On a plus I got my new phone or the procrastination station as I'm dubbing it. Even if it is glued to my hand and real life seems like a dream,  I had it takes pretty cool pictures *Hooray. I wish I had more time to take really beautiful planned out outfits etc, but sadly doing three school runs a day limits you. So the way I see it, at least I can share more outfits and spend less time telling my mum off because she has her finger on my camera lens. I was thinking if I can get out of my rut I really want to do a outfit round up, ground breaking I know.

Faux fur coat: Debenhams*
Pineapple Bag: Primark
Acid wash jeans: Primark*
Trainers:  Spartoo*

So this is my first outfit post, via my new baby. I can't actual express how much I love this jumper, I was gutted not to get the real deal. I had my money ready (rare I know), but I literally went to place in my basket and place my order. Stupidly forgot myself and went to make a cup of tea quick - Big mistake and yeah, someone beat me too it and the two words no-one wants to read 'SOLD OUT' appeared and I felt like pouring the hot tea over myself and throwing my cup at the person who jumped me to the punch. Instead I breathed deeply and yeah hello eBay my old friend, and managed to find this beauty. I feel like a crayon, and it reminds me of the cool kids jumpers in 80s adverts I envied those children so badly.

Be The Change This Christmas

Today was a pretty average day, I dropped the kids off at school after reading morning and than made a mental list of everything I needed to get done. As I was heading back from picking up a bit of shopping, I saw the same homeless man I have seen for the last month. Fast asleep in his sleeping bag, and I felt like crap.

Crap because last night there was a massive rain hail and I knew for a fact he had been outside in it. While I was inside on twitter moaning about it. But what could I do, give this guy a care package. Yeah okay that may help him for that day, but what about the rest of winter. I than saw my Christmas cards and thought 'oh well maybe someone else may help him' and started writing, but it felt really fake. Christmas is about time, it's about giving my mind was racing for something that could help. So than I thought of shelter, and gave my local council a call to see if they were or could help him. I spoke to a lovely guy called Darren, who said the guy was called Alex and the team had chatted to him last night and were in the process of helping him.

He said that the team already had a package for Alex, with everything he needs and that they always try their best to help people off the streets. I really hope that next time I go shopping Alex isn't there, no one should be living on the street. His a person like you or I and should have a roof over his head. If I see him there I will make up that package, I know sometimes it's hard for people to expect help everyone has pride. But I don't want to be one of these people who just moans about society, but does nothing to change and help others. There are so many people like Alex, sleeping rough and it's easy to brush them aside. I don't ever want to be homeless and have no one care. No one believe in your worth as a human being. Lots of people end up homeless, it's easier than same think. I'm not saying you have to rush in and be a hero, there are really simple ways to help. I know for some of you, you may not have money to donate and that's fine there's other ways you can make a difference.

Pick up the phone- If you have seen someone sleeping rough, they may not be in contact with anyone who can help them. Shelter help thousands of people, you can usually find the number at your local councils website. Give them a call and some details about someone you have seen, it maybe the hand they need to get back on their feet. Shelter always offer a heap of free advice.

Donate your clothing- I'm a girl who loves to buy thing from charity shops, but I also love giving to them. If you see a Shelter shop, know that your unwanted clothing will make a difference the money goes back into providing housing care and advice. If you have a workplace collection, or at uni or any other another place you can even arrange with them for it to be picked up. If you phone first, than you can always plan a drop box and get everyone to donate.

There are many other groups that help the homeless, and other things you can do to support them. Fundraising events, donating your time as a volunteer. There is Homeless UK, as well which has so much information and support. Shelter also prove a free housing advice helpline, for anyone struggling to keep their home. Maybe you will help to ease your guilty, or to feel better about yourself, or maybe you just really want to make a difference. Whatever and why ever you decided you really could help change someones life. Feeling bad for someone won't change anything, giving someone change may only help them that day. We need long term change. I know this is random for a #blogmas post, but I hope it helps someone.

Learning How To Crochet: What You Need & The Best Way To Get Started

For so long, I poured over photos of beautiful things people had crocheted. When I was younger my nan taught me basic knitting, as crochet was just so tricky and I just about learned to knit. When she passed I promised myself one day I'd learn, the reality was I forgot all about it and life went on. Than one day I saw a photo of a crocheted cardigan, and I suddenly felt angry so angry I ended up crying. Over a crochet cardigan. Crying.

So much time had passed, were talking years and I still had not picked up a hook and even tried. Who was I kidding I didn't even have any hooks, and how do you learn something if you don't even have the main tool for the job. I was so upset that I had made a promise to myself, not just for me but for her and I had done nothing. So than I made it a mission to learn. If I can you can, it won't be easy. You will want to give up, you will think how are people doing this. Than it will click, and all those failed attempts will fade to the background and before you know it you will be crocheting. You will.

My hook collection and markers both from EBay

Firstly there are a few things your going to need:

A note book- Simple but great for keeping you on track, for making wool lists -No one will understand the pain of buying the wrong shade of wool because it was the same colour.  Making note of what hook you were using, and wool shade if you have started a couple of projects just helps fast track things. Basic ones or not, it just makes it easy so you can focus on learning and not what hook you were using on that granny square. If your following a how to, you can write down notes, rather than having to keep watching over and over again.

Scissors- For cutting wool when your done.

A hook or set of hooks - Mine are from Ebay, go for metal ones or wood. Plastic ones are a mare, for someone starting out. One's with a grip at the end are also a good idea. Don't worry about having a bunch, when you start out it's all about learning the basic stitches first. You will soon get the feel for moving it, but it takes time and practice. My favourite hook is the 6.00mm, but to be honest any hook in your hand is the best start.

Wool/Yarn - DK is my favourite, it's also nice for when your learning. Save chunky and small yarns for when you have a better understanding. You will want to buy all the fancy ones, who can blame you but in the end crocheting with a fluffy yarn as a beginner will make you go insane. You need to really see the stitches to start to understand how they work and to get use to tension when working. Tension (how your holding your yarn/wool will make a difference) will come with time, the more you do the more natural it becomes. When I look back at my first granny square, you can tell it's too tight as it's curling in. It happens, you carry on. Sometimes you will make mistakes and have to unpick work, but when you finish a piece it's all the more special because of the time you have put in.

Markers- Mine again are from EBay, and I think are super cute. These little beauties are a great way to keep stitch count. Once you start chaining and have to work stitches in certain chain spaces, this is where these will again keep your sanity. They are also perfect for keeping your loop, if you need to take a break without it all coming undone.

A needle and thread - This probably comes a little later, when you need to sew in ends. I'd say at the start it's just about learning so this really comes a little later.

So how did I learn from home in my spare time, the answer is simple. All hail You Tube, there are so many how to's but here are the people that inspired me and taught me how to crochet. Even now I have trouble reading patterns. These channels showed me how to crochet along with them. Yes you will stop, pause and re-watch them again and again. Some people crochet too fast and it's almost impossible to understand what's going on. These peeps show you clearly and take their time, I still go back to their videos again and again.

Great for learning the basics and making cute things- HappyBerry Crochet
Learning new patterns and basic skills- Bella Coco
Making bags and clothing with simple stitch use- Bag-O-Day
Making clothing in both knit and crochet- Ruby Stedman

But it's worth every minute. Once you have learned the stitches, the world of crochet opens up I have started to work from patterns. I have even got a couple of crochet magazines to try new things and help my pattern reading skills. I am still a beginner myself,  but every day I feel I can try something new and learn more as I go. This is in no way the perfect way to get started, but this is how I have learned, picking up a book just seemed over whelming but having someone show me and being able to see over and over really helped me to understand.

I have since crocheted a blanket, a cushion, two tops and I'm working on three projects at the moment. So what are you so afraid of, you will fail but you pick up that hook and wool and you keep trying. For me crochet has had a life impact, it helps with my depression and I love that I'm creating something with my hands. You can make so much, and I already have a list of friends and family who want me to make them something. I crochet every single day, and it's great because you decide how long you want to spend doing it. You can make it fit around your life. So this is my second post of #blogmas I hope it helps, and you give it ago. I have a hashtag on my Instagram #lawdoescrochet, if you fancy seeing my progress.

Have you started crocheting? How did you learn, and what would you recommend?

Note since posting this, lots of you have been telling me about crochet in your community people running groups etc .. and how you have found learning face to face has really helped too. This is wonderful to hear, if you have a group in your area please feel free to leave details in the comment section for others to join. Or if you have any other information for beginners feel free to share.

How I Wear: Pink Boots

So I've been neglecting my poor blog, for so long that my hair has gone from red to black true story. I planned a heap of posts, but than ended up with food poisoning so yeah. Than after recovering from that I caught flu off one of my beautiful gem ridden boys and yeah. But I'm going to try my best to do this #Blogmas thing and try to blog everyday for this month. So pitch punch the first of the month, and all that jazz. Let's move on, pink boots not the easy thing to style I'll admit. If your a short gal like myself an ankle boot can be a bit of a mare, thankful these have a little heel.

Faux Fur Collar: River Island
Choker: Dorothy Perkins
Damn Sweater: Choies*
Checked Coat: Primark
Jeans: Old
Dr Martins: Cloggs*

I'd say keep your lower body in a pair of well fitted jeans, and if you want to go for a skirt a long maxi looks pretty awesome. These boots are great to layer up with some chunky socks, and tights for if you prefer a shorter skirt. I decided that as I've been mega ill, I'd go for jeans and my cute ' You melt my heart' sweater and thankfully found this Primark check coat when I unearthed my AW wardrobe. London is pretty cold at the moment, so I'm living in jumpers. I've also mastered crochet a little more, and made a top and a waistcoat cardigan thing while I've been stuck in. But I will tell you more about that tomorrow, it will be well worth a read for anyone who wants to crochet.
