D.I.Y Day 9# Revamp An Old Frame

I can't tell you how many times I have stopped people throwing away old frames, I must seem mad but I'm such a believer in reusing things. It seems when were bored of them because maybe they are the wrong colour etc...They get throw! If the glass breaks you can still use the frame, anyway I won't rant this was just a simple easy project I thought I would share. It's so easy and this is just a basic one, but really you can be as creative as you want. This took a few minutes (in between drying).

I wanted to frame some family photos, but also frame a picture I got from a magazine as it made me laugh. So I picked these up at my local charity shop for £3 for both, but you can always use a frame you already have.

Things you will need:
  • An old frame
  • Paint (I used acrylic, but use what you have)
  • Sponge
  • Gloss (this is optional, I didn't seal mine but you can if you wish)
  • Newspaper
  • Knife or scissors

Step 1: Lay out your newspaper, and make sure your frames are clean of dust and grim. Now take your frame and carefully remove the back and the glass, if you can't remove the glass you can just use tape and cover all the inner edge of the glass.

Step 2: Take your knife or scissors and cut your sponge in half, this makes it easier to use when applying the colour as a bigger sponge will wipe away colour as you paint. Choose a colour, I had a play with shades before deciding on these two.

Step 3: Dab your sponge in the paint, and start to apply to your frame in a swipe affect. You will need to apply it in layers, so cover once let it dry than apply another layer, if you don't you end up soaking the paint off. Apply a fair amount of pressure to the sponge as if will soak the paint up really quick, I didn't have to use a lot of paint. Once your frame is dry and your happy, than your all done.

Note: You can use the sponge for different effects, swipe once with the paint, for a more worn colour. If it's a flat frame, cut your sponge in a shape like a heart for a print effect. Or you could always use glitter instead of paint by mixing glitter and PVA glue for a glam frame. If you use glitter seal it with gloss, or it will all slowly peel off.

See so simple and easy, I wasn't going to even show this. I thought I would as sometimes I see D.I.Y's that are easy but I never think of doing/trying them and it gives me that push. Anyway do you like who I framed? Got this advert of the Ab Fab duo from LOVE magazine, well worth a frame. Let me know if you give it ago.

  2. I love revamping old photographs frames, or even new ones from the dollar store. I've been really getting into doing decoupage on them, covering them in say ripped up pieces of old maps of where a photograph was taken. Really does personalise a photograph frame much more.
