4 Halloween D.I.Ys To Try

I picked these little pumpkins up from ASDA, but you could easily glitter up a pumpkin decoration you already have.

I absolutely love Halloween, however some times the shops can bring out the same old decorations every year. Everyone has there own way of doing Halloween, if you like tacky, creepy, scare, silly or glam the choice is yours. This year I've seen a lot more people going glam this year, so I though I would share some how to that I'm going to trying this year. Think gold, think pastels and Halloween can become a pretty cute and stylish affair. These videos featured a whole bunch of inspiration, and most of all they won't break the bank. I think it's better to have decorations your going to bring out each year, then a bunch of stuff that your going to buy use once and throw away. So maybe give the decorations from last year a little love.

DIY Day | Crochet Projects 003

After spending a whole day, working on a piece only to burn the middle while blocking. I decided that rather than cry and get myself in a state, I'd vent on twitter and fingers crossed someone could talk me back from binning all my work and throwing the crochet town in. Yes I was feeling dramatic, but anyone who has done this will understand seeing your hardworking ruined in 5 secs flat. Thankfully Isobel being the babe she is, gave me words of comfort and I thought about all the work I hadn't burnt. So in light of staying positive, and for any other crochet peeps who have had a blocking disaster. It happens, we all mess up but don't lose all hope. Here's some of the pieces I've worked on since my last crochet projects post

D.I.Y Day| Christmas Stag Head

So I'd seen a lot of posts for this D.I.Y, but I wanted something cheap that was easy to make and up-cycled things I already had. I wanted mine to be a little tacky, to fit it with my kitsch Christmas tree but you can make yours however you want to. Changing up the paper, adding a different coloured pom pom to make it your own. You don't even need a temple, just seeing how it fits together you can easily make your own. Have a look at this post, as this is where I got the idea to free hand my temple. If you really can't draw one out, than fear not there's a temple here.

You Will Need:

Cardboard - I used two Beer boxes
Newspaper- To make your temple on
Wallpaper- I used samples that I picked up from my local D.I.Y store
Glue - I picked mine ( UHU ) up from Poundland in the tools section.
Scissors - Use a strong pair, as you will need to cut card. If you have a craft knife use that as it will be far easier.
Optional - Goggle eyes, sequins, yarn and a pom pom maker also picked up at pound stores. You could try a dollar store or craft shop. I mounted mine on an old wreath which was from a pound shop.

D.I.Y Day| Denim Patch Jacket

Denim patch jackets continue to be a massive trendy, for autumn you can layer faux fur collars on top to keep warm. If your buying one it can get pricey, and it's annoying if you already have a bunch to feel you have to buy another . Also I find I don't always love the patch selection on them, so of course I had to D.I.Y it. The great thing with a denim jacket is you can go wild, trims are my favourite as you can layer them to build up a cool design.

So it's super simple, and doesn't take much time. You can sew by hand, or by machine or glue, but sewing will last a lot longer. As I said in my patch jeans tutorial, you can build up your collection over time and keep adding as you can. This makes for a jacket that's truly unique to you, and it doesn't have to cost heaps.

DIY Day | Crochet Projects 002

To be honestly I completely forgot about this feature, till someone asked me what I'd been working on. If you follow me on Instagram and follow #lawdoescrochet you can see what I'm working on. As I love seeing what others have made and are working on, I promise I will feature more of what I make and link to patterns used. As I love looking at makes for inspiration, knowing what size hook was used etc as it can be good to get an idea on sizing. I'm working on an African crochet blanket, so it's taken up a massive chunk of my crochet time.

I'm looking forward to finishing it, as it's been a project I work on every now and than. I also need to finish my Star Wars crochet balls, as our Christmas tree will be pretty dull without them. The boys picked the theme this year, so we will see how it goes. I try and make a mix of home ware and clothing, as I think it can get boring not to make yourself a little something every now and than. So here are my latest makes, I do have some more but I'll save them for next time.

D.I.Y Day| Off The Shoulder Top

Fabric: EBay

So I finally braved using, my candy jar fabric and made something. For my first attempt at the off the shoulder top, I actual loved how this DIY turned out. Of course the off the shoulder look has been and continued to be a massive trend, one that I've actual adored. I  saw a couple that I loved but they were just way out of my budget.

So this was a great way to brush up on my sewing skills, plus I made it for under £15. The great thing is once you have made one, you can make a bunch as it's super simple. Sadly I can't take credit for this genius how to, as that would go to one of my favourite You Tube duo The Sorry Girls. They have a bunch of how to videos, and are worth watching. So if you want to make your own off the shoulder top, than the video with everything you need is here. They explain it so well, and go slowly so don't panic if your a beginner sewer this is thee perfect project for you. They also have one from an up cycled shirt, if you want to do as little sewing as possible.

D.I.Y Day: Patch Denim Jeans

The fun thing about patching up clothing is that you can do it over time, I tend to build my patch collection up than use them. Or you can buy a pack of patches and just go for it, it's simple but a really effective way of jazzing up your clothing. Denim is a key trend this season, so what better way to add a bit of fun and life back into some plain threads. It's really easy, and you don't have to be a master of sewing to achieve the look. As this has been massive and everyone is getting back into pins and patches  you can pick them up easily on the high street. There's a bunch of new indie brands making them if you prefer something more limited, Instagram is flowing with inspiration so have a look.

Kiss & Makeup - A Evening Of Jewellery Making With Tatty Devine

The New Kiss & Makeup collection

Last week all my crafty dreams came true, when the queens of perspex jewellery - Tatty Devine invited me to an evening of jewellery making. A necklace from their brand new collection Kiss & Makeup. Jazmine talked me through the collection, and had on the eye shadow palette necklace which matched her outfit perfectly. I love the whole retro vibe, it was like someone had raided my mothers makeup bag. My mum had all the classic 80s makeup, nail polish with the long golden lid, eye shadows in soft blues and pinks.

DIY Day | Crochet Projects 001

I thought I would start a new feature, as I have shared a lot of the same things lately. I tend to crochet a lot more now as my skills improve and sometimes I hate spamming my Instagram with everything I'm working on. Also I guess it's a great way for me to keep up to date on what I've made,  and share with you patterns I've used. I also think it's handy as I can talk a little about mistakes I've made, so maybe if I repeat projects I'll know to size up or down or do it a different way. As this is my first lot of projects, I haven't made note of hooks used or wool/yarn names, but I can start to. I'm really proud of what I have made so far, and love sharing my progress shots. I managed to make these pretty quickly, but trust me I have projects that I  have gotten fed up with and put on the back burner never to be picked up again. So I am trying to make sure those do get finished.

D.I.Y Day | How To Crochet A Rag Rug for Recycle Week

Cactus pillow: Made by me from an old top and cushion how to coming soon.

If you haven't heard it's Recycle week 18th-24th, if you're a new reader *stands up with hand in the air 'Hello I'm Laura and I'm an upcycle addict'. I'm also a hoarder, but combining these two things means somehow I can get my craft on and try and make something beautiful and saving things from landfill. I'm also a worrier and always feel guilty throwing things away. So without sounding like I'm telling you what to do, or like I'm some perfect human who has never throw away something that could have gone to the charity shop. If you can have a quick clear out, give to friends, a charity shop, drop in some bits next time your in a store running recycling bins. Bonus, this means you get to 'treat yo self' because of course your an amazing human being that has like basically saved humanity. I decided to make this for my sons new bedroom, as the rug I had seen for them would have cost me £250 I kid you not. Now I'm planning on making more as it really doesn't take that long once you get started.

Learning How To Crochet: What You Need & The Best Way To Get Started

For so long, I poured over photos of beautiful things people had crocheted. When I was younger my nan taught me basic knitting, as crochet was just so tricky and I just about learned to knit. When she passed I promised myself one day I'd learn, the reality was I forgot all about it and life went on. Than one day I saw a photo of a crocheted cardigan, and I suddenly felt angry so angry I ended up crying. Over a crochet cardigan. Crying.

So much time had passed, were talking years and I still had not picked up a hook and even tried. Who was I kidding I didn't even have any hooks, and how do you learn something if you don't even have the main tool for the job. I was so upset that I had made a promise to myself, not just for me but for her and I had done nothing. So than I made it a mission to learn. If I can you can, it won't be easy. You will want to give up, you will think how are people doing this. Than it will click, and all those failed attempts will fade to the background and before you know it you will be crocheting. You will.

My hook collection and markers both from EBay

Firstly there are a few things your going to need:

A note book- Simple but great for keeping you on track, for making wool lists -No one will understand the pain of buying the wrong shade of wool because it was the same colour.  Making note of what hook you were using, and wool shade if you have started a couple of projects just helps fast track things. Basic ones or not, it just makes it easy so you can focus on learning and not what hook you were using on that granny square. If your following a how to, you can write down notes, rather than having to keep watching over and over again.

Scissors- For cutting wool when your done.

A hook or set of hooks - Mine are from Ebay, go for metal ones or wood. Plastic ones are a mare, for someone starting out. One's with a grip at the end are also a good idea. Don't worry about having a bunch, when you start out it's all about learning the basic stitches first. You will soon get the feel for moving it, but it takes time and practice. My favourite hook is the 6.00mm, but to be honest any hook in your hand is the best start.

Wool/Yarn - DK is my favourite, it's also nice for when your learning. Save chunky and small yarns for when you have a better understanding. You will want to buy all the fancy ones, who can blame you but in the end crocheting with a fluffy yarn as a beginner will make you go insane. You need to really see the stitches to start to understand how they work and to get use to tension when working. Tension (how your holding your yarn/wool will make a difference) will come with time, the more you do the more natural it becomes. When I look back at my first granny square, you can tell it's too tight as it's curling in. It happens, you carry on. Sometimes you will make mistakes and have to unpick work, but when you finish a piece it's all the more special because of the time you have put in.

Markers- Mine again are from EBay, and I think are super cute. These little beauties are a great way to keep stitch count. Once you start chaining and have to work stitches in certain chain spaces, this is where these will again keep your sanity. They are also perfect for keeping your loop, if you need to take a break without it all coming undone.

A needle and thread - This probably comes a little later, when you need to sew in ends. I'd say at the start it's just about learning so this really comes a little later.

So how did I learn from home in my spare time, the answer is simple. All hail You Tube, there are so many how to's but here are the people that inspired me and taught me how to crochet. Even now I have trouble reading patterns. These channels showed me how to crochet along with them. Yes you will stop, pause and re-watch them again and again. Some people crochet too fast and it's almost impossible to understand what's going on. These peeps show you clearly and take their time, I still go back to their videos again and again.

Great for learning the basics and making cute things- HappyBerry Crochet
Learning new patterns and basic skills- Bella Coco
Making bags and clothing with simple stitch use- Bag-O-Day
Making clothing in both knit and crochet- Ruby Stedman

But it's worth every minute. Once you have learned the stitches, the world of crochet opens up I have started to work from patterns. I have even got a couple of crochet magazines to try new things and help my pattern reading skills. I am still a beginner myself,  but every day I feel I can try something new and learn more as I go. This is in no way the perfect way to get started, but this is how I have learned, picking up a book just seemed over whelming but having someone show me and being able to see over and over really helped me to understand.

I have since crocheted a blanket, a cushion, two tops and I'm working on three projects at the moment. So what are you so afraid of, you will fail but you pick up that hook and wool and you keep trying. For me crochet has had a life impact, it helps with my depression and I love that I'm creating something with my hands. You can make so much, and I already have a list of friends and family who want me to make them something. I crochet every single day, and it's great because you decide how long you want to spend doing it. You can make it fit around your life. So this is my second post of #blogmas I hope it helps, and you give it ago. I have a hashtag on my Instagram #lawdoescrochet, if you fancy seeing my progress.

Have you started crocheting? How did you learn, and what would you recommend?

Note since posting this, lots of you have been telling me about crochet in your community people running groups etc .. and how you have found learning face to face has really helped too. This is wonderful to hear, if you have a group in your area please feel free to leave details in the comment section for others to join. Or if you have any other information for beginners feel free to share.

D.I.Y Day: Tie Dye Heart Pillows

This weekend is Valentines day, but to be frank you can try this D.I.Y even if you hate Valentines, are single, and would rather marry your cat than a human being. It's fine, we have all been there, I don't mind it me and Baz have always been a low key couple so small tokens are the way we usual go. This year I thought I would make some gifts, sadly my other make is still not ready I may share it another day but at least you can try this as it only took a couple of hours. Any reason to tie dye something is reason enough for me.

Do You Want To Build A Snowman - Snowman Fun Kit From LUSH

Lush never fail to impress me, and this year they have made a very special product that's not only fun for kids okay, okay and adults too. But this Snowman Fun kit* will be raising money for the children of Japan, who are still living in challenging environments following the 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster. 10p from every sale of each bar goes to the LUSH FunD, this will than be distributed in grants to projects providing fun and recreational actives for the children. It may not seem a lot, but if everyone buys one think how much could be raised. Every child deserves to enjoy their childhood, and this way you get to have fun with this mouldable soap and give a little so that others can have fun too.

As my two boys love the Disney film Frozen, it only seemed right to make Olaf a little magical snowman from the film. Olaf is not only funny, but is a wise little snowman, and here's how to make yours.

It doesn't have to be perfect, and you don't have to add the twigs, you can make any kind of snowman you like. Have fun and don't forget that you can use it as a bubble bar, soap or even shampoo when your finished playing with him. Just remember that his limited edition, so get him before his gone, and support something good in the process. Sorry if this post has caused you to have frozen songs  suck in your head all day. I love the fragrance of this bar, it has Sicilian lemon which is a really refreshing. Mixed with buchu and bergamot essential oils so it has that warm and christmas feel to it but not too earthy. If you let it dry out and it becomes more crumbly it's easier to use as a bubble bar. It's simple to wash with and great for anyone with dry skin, as it's really creamy.

If you give this a go than please tweet me a photo, (of the snowman not you in the bath by the way, lets keep it clean) at @law1sfab . I would love to see how you do with your Olaf, or what snowman you decided to make. You can grab a snowman FUN kit from your local LUSH or online for £5.00- With 10p from each kit sold going to the LUSH FunD.

D.I.Y Day: Easy Team Eye Makeup Remover

Yes a D.I.Y, well kind of. It's been forever so I'm happy to get back into sharing some tips that you can do at home. Easy Team got in touch with me, and asked if I wanted to try and share their tips for things that can make life that bit easier. So first up, eye makeup remover. As my skin is in a pretty bad way at the moment, I decided to show you on my 'makeup hand' I've named Tina. I did actual try this on my eye's too, so it's been full tried and tested. Above it what you will need:

  • Olive Oil
  • Witch Hazel
  • Water
  • A bottle or Dispenser
  • Cotton pads

Effectiveness: Firstly 2 drops of each will not give you enough to fill your bottle, so depending on the size mix the ingredients in a cup. I ended up using 6 tablespoons of each, and it was enough to fill my bottle. Than pouring it slowly in the bottle I was ready to test it out. As it states the liquids will separate quickly so pop the lid on and shake. This can became a little annoying, saying this it is really effective the oil lifts and the witch hazel is good for killing off gems and getting that eye liner off in a whizz. I like that you know whats in it, no chemicals and really cheap to make a massive batch of remover.

Overall: As you can see from Tina, with about 2-4 wipes you can remove all makeup. It can be a little oily, but for someone with dry skin this is good. I actual preferred this to my branded eye makeup remover, as like I said where it has so little in it doesn't strip the skin as much. The only real down side is having to shake it every time you use it, but overall it's pretty good.

D.I.Y Day 14# : Tie Dye T-shirt

Tie dye is a massive trend, and so I know it's a simple one but I thought I would do a step by step for those of you who have never tie dyed before. You can use may methods to achieve tie dye, this is a really simple one that anyone can do. It's great for kids to try, Corben my three year old helped me dye some of his old tops this way. Just be careful with the warm/hot water part. So it's super easy and it cost very little. You don't need much, and it doesn't take long you can tie pretty much anything. It's great for updating an old item of clothing, for the on trend 90's look that is huge at the moment. I picked this blue from Dylon, as again, blue tie dye is massively on trend. I think this would look great on a maxi dress, so lets get started.

Step One: Pick an item you would like to dye, be it new or old. You can tie dye an old printed t-shirt which can look cool or a white maxi dress (very 90s grunge). Anyway make sure you can dye the fabric, cotton is best to use. Also you could always dye bedding and curtains if you want to update your home interior too. I picked a white t-shirt. Pinch the fabric in random places, and tie your rubber band nice and tight around it. This will be where the dye can't take, creating the star burst effect.

Step Two: Damped your fabric, as this helps the dye take. I used a hand wash fabric dye, and just a small pack. Follow the instructions on the back, your pack size will determine your water to salt ratio: mine was 250g (5 tbsp) of salt to 6 litres warm water (40c). Give this a good stir before you add the dye.

Step Three: Pour the dye in and stir, than take your item of clothing and make sure you soak them/it well. Stir your item for the first 15 minutes, than around every now and than over the 40 minutes (you can leave it longer, if you like). Once the time is up, run it under cold water to get rid of any excess dye. Than you can remove the rubber bands, hang to dry. Your finished ...just make sure you wash your item separately for the first few washes. It's that easy and you can use it to update heaps of things.

If you want multi coloured spiral (spider) tie dye, watch this guys video below. His a dye legend, and his methods work really well. It's easy and it doesn't cost very much, but it's a great.

D.I.Y Day Slime Nails

You may have seen me use the WAH book to create ice cream nails, from their drippy design so I decided ages ago that for Halloween I wanted to do a slime version. Sadly everyone else had the same idea, but I thought I would share mine anyway as a lot of people at events asked how I did it. It also was a great reason to use toxic apple by Models Own, which has to be thee best shade of neon green ever!

Things you will need:
  • Green nail polish (I used Models Own Toxic Apple )
  • Black nail art pen (You can get off Ebay try this seller here)
  • White nail art pen
  • Top coat

Step 1: Paint on the green nail polish for your base colour, I think 2-3 coats of any nail polish will give you a strong colour. Let each layer dry before applying the next coat, or it will bubble.

Step 2: Than create a wiggle line dipping up and down with your back nail art pen, than take your time filling it in with either the brush end or the pen end - I used a plain nail so that it's nice and clear to see, as you can see mine are not perfect just have fun.

Step 3: Add a little bit of white nail art pen, to highlight your slime it ail give your drips an extra pop. Than once dry, add a top coat this will stop them chipping and flaking off.

Enjoy :)

D.I.Y Day 12# Studded Socks

I know, I know more studs I promise my next D.I.Y will be a little different but I do love a quick and easy D.I.Y! I also know that not everyone has time for detailed projects, or has the right equipment like a sewing machine. So I will put up some more crafty projects soon, but for now here is a cheeky one, that even the your cat could do.
What you need
-Socks (new or old)
-Screw back studs (off eBay)
Project time: 5-10 minutes

Step 1: The best way to line your studs is along the elastic, I only want the studs on the outer side of the sock but it's up to you if you want them all the way around. Take the back of the stud, and gentle push it through the back of the sock so the screw bit sticks out.

Step 2: Screw the stud front on, and that's all there is to it. Push the sock together so that you can equal match it on both sides. You don't have to use all the studs you have, I just like to sort them so I have the same amount of studs on either side. That's it!

Enjoy & if you try this link your post below in the comments, I would love to see. A

D.I.Y Day 11# How To Dip Dye Hair Extensions

Thank you to everyone who has entered my fox bag giveaway, and here is something a little different for you today. I got A LOT, of emails asking about dip dyed hair and for a 'how to' on faking it. So yes there are a heap of videos on Youtube, but you requested one from me so here it is. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment and I'll get back to you. I think I'm going to be making some more, as I want to play around with different colours.

Checked shirt: Topshop
Scallop edged top: c/o Clothing At Tesco
Shorts: Topshop via eBay
Shoes: eBay
Necklace: c/o Temporary Secretary

I got the extensions off of ebay, as long as they are 100% human hair it's fine (try to get cruelty free were possible). Mine are really thin, as they were under £20! If you want thicker ones, they will be more pricey as if they are really, really cheap I would question how they are getting the hair (but that's just me). So anyway the sun is back in London, so fingers crossed I can ditch the tights soon. Enjoy and let me know how you get on.

Here I am with my real dip dyed hair, but the extensions throw in, to give it more colour.
